The majority of species photographs on this site — 349 of the 360 birds, butterflies, and dragonflies & damselflies documented here — were taken by Jack Powell, the site's founding photographer, whose work has documented Oklahoma's wildlife for years.

Frequently asked questions

Why do only some photos have a visible credit?

Creative Commons licenses like the ones on Wikimedia Commons legally require attribution, so those 11 photos are credited by name here. The site's other photography, taken directly by the site's founding photographer, doesn't carry that same requirement, so it's acknowledged collectively in the "Site photography" note above rather than photo by photo.

Can I reuse the Creative Commons-licensed photos myself?

Each one remains under its own original license, linked next to its credit above — you can reuse it under those same terms, which generally means keeping the same attribution and license notice, not this site's permission.

Can I reuse the site's other photography?

No — the site's non-Wikimedia photography isn't openly licensed for reuse. See the Terms of Use page for the full intellectual-property terms.

Do the credited photographers endorse this site?

No — being credited here reflects only the license terms attached to their photo, not any endorsement of or affiliation with Birds of Oklahoma.

Why credit photographers at all if some photos need no attribution?

It's simply good practice, and for the Wikimedia Commons photos it's a license requirement, not optional — Creative Commons licenses like CC BY and CC BY-SA are legally conditioned on giving credit, so this page exists specifically to satisfy that condition clearly and in one place rather than scattering it thinly across dozens of individual pages.
